Select Season

Select schedule

Greatly dependent on weather, the Select Season generally runs from Early January to March with the select tournament following.

About the Tournament

The Select Tournament represents the culmination of all the hard work kids have put into soccer over the course of two seasons, fall and select. The games are often very entertaining as the skill level of the kids is usually very high. We highly recommend attending in order to cheer on Winters’ kids.

This year, Winters will be playing in Pleasant Hill and Davis. Specific information about the time and place of the tournaments is still forth coming. Please check back with this site or watch the Winters AYSO Facebook page for up-to-date information.

About Select Season

The AYSO Select program is an opportunity for interested players to improve their skills in a more competitive environment following the fall season. It is open only to players who registered and participated in at least half of the fall season games.

We usually field a much smaller group of teams for this season, which is comprised of players who want to continue playing competitive soccer throughout the winter months. Ultimately the number of teams formed depends upon the number of players registering. Of the players who do register for the Select Season, the respective coaches will select the players who best fit a well-balanced team.

Registration for the Select Season begins near the end of the Fall Season. Teams are selected and notified in December, and the Select Season runs from January through March. Select Season teams can continue on together after the Select Season and play in tournaments scheduled from March through June.

FAQ’s

Q: If my child is chosen to play in Select, what should I expect?

A: First and foremost, you should expect the Six Philosophies of AYSO (Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship and Player Development) to be followed at all times.

You should expect more distant away games, as teams will typically play other Select teams from nearby Regions (such as Pleasant Hill, Mt. Diablo, Winters, Antelope, and others).

Our select teams are not club teams. Winning is not as important to AYSO as developing players. As such, all players will play a minimum of 50% of all games. Likewise, AYSO requires all players to play 75% of the game before anyone else can play a full game.

Q: If selected, what should I expect for a time commitment?

A: Typically, Select teams have training sessions twice a week (similar to Fall season) beginning in December. Select Season games occur on Saturdays and start in early January and run through March, culminating with the Select Season tournament at the end of March.

Q: Who coaches Select season?

A: All our coaches are volunteers. Typically the coach with the team that wins the Fall Season tournament in their age group is offered the job of coaching during the Select Season. If they choose not to, then the Coach Coordinator and the rest of the Winters AYSO Board often try to find a coach. If no one steps up, there is no team.

It is the goal of Winters AYSO that all coaches undergo a minimum of training in order to coach AYSO. Minimum training standards are set by AYSO. For the Select coaches, those guidelines are strictly enforced since a team with a coach who hasn’t undergone the requisite training cannot compete in the end-of-season tournament.

Q: If my child applies for Select, what is his/her and our family’s commitment?

A: A high level of commitment is expected from coaches, players, and the parents during the Select season. Players are expected to commit to the program if chosen. While some players are involved in other sports, for the good of the team, most Select coaches require that training sessions and games take AT LEAST equal precedence with other sports.
